The voice talking to this mother in a car, as she drops off her kids at school, might be her subconscious. Or maybe it’s The Wizard of Oz or Siri or the NSA? Or maybe it’s the ghost of Marx or Engles?
Every day that I send my children to school I PRAY FOR THEIR LIVES.
The average American mainlines a Big Gulp, holds down 3 jobs so they can barely feed and house their kids, praying in their churches that they don’t go bankrupt from a medical emergency or watch their children die from a school shooting, diabetes (slow murder by corporate-lobbied and government-funded high fructose corn syrup diets) or sent to fight ”bad” Muslims in forever wars, that enable a select group of rich white men to endlessly play golf, and rape children on islands.
The NRA has spent decades perfecting a narrative that insists that owning a gun is your right as an individual, a way for you to protect yourself against a society devoid of law and order, but the greatest threat of attack on the average American is from greedy corporate lobbyists like the NRA and the politicians making millions off their guns at the expense of our families.
The Second Amendment was written so the slave-owning pals of the “founding fathers” (and some of the “fathers” themselves) wouldn’t be dissuaded from joining the Union, because they wanted to maintain state militias to quell riots by enslaved people. In 1857 the Dred Scott v. Sandford decision cited the right to bear arms as a reason why Black people could not be citizens, as it would extend to them rights intended for white citizens. The Black Panthers openly carried firearms “to police the police” (needed today!) and so Republican Don Mulford, backed by the NRA, repealed the law allowing Californians to openly carry weapons. It was signed into law by the Republican Jesus Christ himself, Governor Reagan, who later commented that he saw “no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons.”

The right to bear arms would also apparently serve as a check against government overreach and the dangers of a standing army, which the British had used to oppress American “colonists”. If you support the Second Amendment, please take the “Blue Lives Matter” flag off the back of your pickup ‘cause you don’t trust the government and you certainly don’t support its armed forces… Instead you support archaic laws that murder children in the schoolhouse, whilst the country pumps billions into defending itself against “Muslim extremists”. In 2023 national defense represented roughly 13% of the budget, while education was about 3%.
Look it just simply ain’t “Make America Great Again”.
“Make America” might be more accurate.
This place never became what those slave-owning white dudes wrote loftily about in the summer of 1787, after they sent the Brits packing. 250 years later it’s still corrupted power at the highest level, with enslaved African-Americans and indigenous people, women (particularly non-white women) and the non-heternormative-conforming as underdogs, and a white monarchy where the kings are Musk, Bezos and Zuck.
And the greatest difference between now and when The Constitution was written, is that we now live under the mushroom cloud of nuclear annihilation.
School shootings in America happen because of greed and white supremacy. And to quote my eldest daughter, who we’ll be “sending off” to public school this week, “YOU ALL SUCK”.
